Details of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram as revealed by the 2nd Gaia data release

Dr Floor van Leeuwen, University of Cambridge

I will briefly review the Gaia satellite mission and how the data from this mission allow us to establish, with much greater accuracy than ever  before, critical relations between observed properties of stars. I will show in particular the details that have now come into focus for the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, which shows relations between stellar surface temperature and brightness for stars of different ages, masses and chemical composition, and which is as such a vital tool in understanding stellar structure and evolution.

Lectures held at 7.30pm in the Berrill Lecture Theatre, Open University. For further information contact Ben Dryer ([email protected]).
