Professor Isobel Hook, Lancaster University Just over 20 years ago, astronomers discovered that the Universe is accelerating
This unexpected result was based on careful measurements of Type Ia supernovae
The result implies that something, often referred to as "Dark Energy", is pushing the universe apart
In this talk, run jointly by the IOP Manchester Branch and Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, Isobel will describe the discovery, and how we are improving our understanding of the results through further observation
She will also look at the exciting prospects for the future of supernova cosmology

Teaching 2D materials about the third-dimension

April 28, 2021

Physical phenomena can take on very different forms depending on the dimension of the space where they occur
With the technological progress of the past decades, the once-fictional flatland universe became a reality with so-called heterostructures, that restrict particles to live in a plane (quantum well), a line (quantum wire) or even in a a single point (quantum dot)
In this closing webinar to the series, Prof
Jonathan Finley, Chair of Semiconductor Nanostructures and quantum Systems at the Technische Universität München in Munich, will give a pedagogical introduction to the nice things that happen in space of reduced dimensionality and how this powers today and tomorrow's electronics and optics

30pm "Listening to the heartbeat of Mars” Dr
Naomi Murdoch, ISAE-SUPAERO, University of Toulouse The InSight mission landed on Mars in November 2018 and placed SEIS, a seismometer with unprecedented sensitivity, onto the surface of the red planet
This football sized instrument has now been sitting quietly on the Martian surface for more than two Earth years listening almost continuously to the heartbeat of the planet
Since the first detection of a marsquake in April of 2018, the team has identified hundreds of events that can be used to peer into the heart of Mars
What is causing these seismic events? What has InSight taught us about Mars? How have the InSight data surprised us? In this talk I will present an overview of the InSight mission and address these key questions
I will also spend time discussing some innovative strategies developed within the InSight team that use the Martian atmosphere to look under the surface of the planet

James Kakalios, professor of Physics at the University of Minnesota and author of the book The Physics of Superheroes
In James’s book, he explores the basic laws of physics, focussing on examples of comic book scenes that can be used to understand the diverse laws of physics from an unusual angle, such as Gwen Stacy's death and Ant-Man's ability to punch his way out of a paper bag
James relates these elements of comic books to principles of physics, such as levers and torque, and in this way covers diverse topics, from mechanics to the quantum world

Solving the Quandary of the Quark
Organised By IOP North East Branch
Tags Computational Theoretical NorthEast NorthEastBranch
May 27, 2021
Sentences containing search word
Professor Christine Davies University of Glasgow The strong interaction is one of the four fundamental forces of nature and governs the interaction of quarks that make up the protons and neutrons of the atomic nucleus
Because quarks are never seen as free particles, the effects of the strong interaction are largely hidden from our direct view
Christine Davies will discuss how the theory of the strong interaction, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), can be solved numerically using a method called lattice QCD
It offers the possibility of accurate results from first principles for the properties of the bound states of quarks known as hadrons
Comparison with experimental results can then lead to stringent tests of our understanding of fundamental particle physics as well as searches for discrepancies that can point to new interactions at a deeper level
She will describe some of the results from lattice QCD, including those that form part of the calculation of the magnetic moment of the muon
The new experimental determination of this magnetic moment was featured in the news recently since it shows a tantalising discrepancy with what we expect from our Standard Model of particle physics

Speaker: Dr Bajram Zeqiri (NPL) Measurement lies at the heart of all science and engineering with progress in these disciplines often linked to advances in the science of measurement (metrology)
In the International System of Units – the ‘SI’ System – there are seven standard quantities which are called ‘base units’: the second, metre, kilogram, ampere, kelvin, candela and mole
On 20 May 2019, to remove these limits, there was a subtle but important redefinition of four of these base units – the kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole
This talk will explain the rationale for these profound changes

Designed assembly of colloids at interfaces - fundamentals to applications
Organised By IOP Liquids and Complex Fluids Group
Tags #IOPGroupEvents #LiquidsAndComplexFluidsGroup
June 14, 2021

Colloidal particles at liquid interfaces represents a rapidly expanding area of soft matter science
The dramatic growth in interest in these systems has until now been primarily driven by the discovery of multi-phase systems such as emulsions and foams stabilised solely by particle adsorption
However, more recently, there has been a growing realisation that the unique behaviour of colloids at interfaces also provides new exciting opportunities to design the assembly of colloids into dimensionally confined structures in order to create functional nanomaterials, reconfigurable devices and biomimetic systems
The aim of this conference is to bring together the diverse research communities interested in this area, from fundamental soft matter science to applied research in areas such as novel formulations, lab on a chip reactors, nanomaterials for energy, biomaterials, encapsulation and controlled release etc
