Everyday Physics

How can you cook on a hob that doesn’t get hot?  Why do some things come out dry from a dishwasher while others are still wet?  When your windscreen wipers are on intermittent mode, how do they know when to switch on and off?  In this talk we shall explain the physics behind these questions together with a variety of other everyday situations.

Alan Davies is Professor Emeritus, Mathematics, at the University of Hertfordshire where he was Head of Department until his retirement.  Since then he has spent most of his time working with school pupils and presenting mathematics and science to general audiences of all ages
