Experimental volcanology: Probing volcanic eruptions in the laboratory

Understanding the potential for volcanic eruptions to escalate to catastrophic and hazardous activity is vital to ensure the safety of people and infrastructures around volcanoes. To this end, volcanologists monitor active volcanoes, examine past eruption deposits, use models to understand the magma systems below them, and in the last decades have used laboratory experiments to deform the rocks and lavas erupted from them.
