Inspiring the Next Generation

Caroline Alliston, STEM educator and author

In this illustrated talk, professional engineer and STEM educator Caroline Alliston will explore why we need to focus on enthusing children about STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and introduce fun and effective ways to engage them using design, build and test activities. She will explain her experience of developing and running STEM activities in schools and clubs over the last ten years, and talk about IoP funded school projects such as ’Fan Boats’ and ‘Vibrating Brush Monsters’ which are currently running in South West region. She will explain why it is a good idea to start at primary age, and the importance of appealing to both girls and boys, as well as those from a variety of backgrounds. She will highlight how running such activities can help children understand how STEM is relevant to their lives, and finally she will suggest some ways in which you might like to become involved in inspiring the next generation.
