Date: 23rd January 2020
Time: Lecture starts at 19:00, FREE tea & coffee available in LJ foyer from 18:00
Location: LJ1.75, Lennard Jones Laboratories, Keele University, ST5 5BG
Speaker: Dr. Mark Read (University of Birmingham)
Title: Nuclear Fuel Materials and Waste Encapsulation
Abstract: After a brief comment on climate change and the UK Government’s commitment to reduce our carbon emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050, viable ‘clean energy’ options will be discussed. Of these, the focus will then switch to nuclear generated electricity and the pros and cons. Following a quick appreciation of how a nuclear reactor works, Dr. Read will introduce his research into the computer modelling of nuclear fuel and ceramics to immobilise the radioactive waste.
These talks are open to everyone and are sponsored by the West Midlands Branch of the IoP.
