Physics and Industry: An Absorbing Topic

We hope you can all join us for this memorial lecture in honour of John Bradshaw, who had been heavily involved with the IOP for many years.

Lecture Title: Physics and Industry: An Absorbing Topic

Given by: Paul Warren

Abstract: The use of physics – indeed, any of the so-called STEM subjects - within industry is incredibly varied. No two days work will involve the same technical topics – and the range of subjects that an industrial researcher is expected to know about is very broad. As well as a good grasp of the relevant subject matter, other areas – such as manufacturing, intellectual property and marketing - will influence the technical decisions and pathways to follow. In this talk, I will give some examples of the physics involved in the flat glass industry – where John Bradshaw worked for 30 years. These examples are chosen to reflect aspects of the work that John performed – and then how these topics are being utilised today.

Location: Harrington Lecture Theatre, Harrington Building, University of Central Lancashire, PR1 7BG
