Supernovae and the search for Dark Energy
Professor Isobel Hook, Lancaster University
Just over 20 years ago, astronomers discovered that the Universe is accelerating. This unexpected result was based on careful measurements of Type Ia supernovae. The result implies that something, often referred to as "Dark Energy", is pushing the universe apart.
In this talk, run jointly by the IOP Manchester Branch and Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, Isobel will describe the discovery, and how we are improving our understanding of the results through further observation. She will also look at the exciting prospects for the future of supernova cosmology.
